Interpersonal communication
ability is regarded as essential in
social life as people need to interact with other through communication. The
success of an interpersonal communication was affected by a factor rising from
a person him/herself called as self concept. This research was designed for
describing the teenagers self concept and their interpersonal communication
ability. In addition this research was also intended to test the correlation
between the self concept and interpersonal communication ability.
This was descriptive
correlational research which used quantitative method. This was conducted to
the teenagers in orphanages in Kota Bengkulu that consisted of 103 people. By
using purposive sampling technique, 82 teenagers were choses as the sample. The
instrument of the research was close ended questionnaire of likert scale model.
For the self concept variable, the validity of the instrument was 0.873 and the
realibility was 0.931, and for the interpersonal communication ability
variable, the validity of the instrument
was 0.825 and the realibility was 0.929. The data gotten was analyzed by
using mean hypothetic technique and to see the correlation of the two variables
product
moment correlation analysis assisted with SPSS 20.00 was applied.
The result of the research indicated that: (1)
the teenagers self concept was in low category, (2) the teenagers interpersonal
communication ability was in low category and (3) there was a significant and
positive correlationbetween teenagers self concept and their interpersonal
communication ability in which the correlation value was 0.304. Hence, it was
implied that a service program was needed in order to improve the students’
self concept and ability in interpersonal communication.

Kemampuan komunikasi interpersonal
sangat penting untuk kehidupan sosial karena orang akan berhubungan dengan
orang lain melalui komunikasi, kesuksesan dalam berkomunikasi interpersonal dapat
dipengaruhi oleh faktor yang berasal dari diri seseorang yaitu konsep diri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan konsep diri remaja
dan kemampuan komunikasi interpersonal. Penelitian juga berupaya untuk menguji
hubungan antara konsep diri dengan kemampuan komunikasi interpersonal.
Penelitian ini menggunakan
metode kuantitatif jenis deskriptif korelasional. Penelitian dilakukan terhadap
remaja Panti Asuhan di Kota Bengkulu dengan populasi sebanyak 103 remaja.
Jumlah sampel penelitian sebanyak 82 remaja untuk pengambilan sampel menggunakan
teknik purposive sampling. Instrumen
yang digunakan adalah angket tertutup dengan model skala Likert dan validitas
0.873, reliabilitas 0,931 (konsep diri) dan validitas 0.825, reliabilitas 0.929
(kemampuan komunikasi interpersonal). Data yang diperoleh
dianalisis dengan menggunakan teknik mean hipotetic dan untuk menguji
hubungan antara kedua variabel digunakan analisis product moment correlation
yang diolah dengan bantuan program SPSS.20.00.
Temuan penelitian ini
memperlihatkan bahwa: (1) Konsep diri remaja berada pada kategori rendah (2) Kemampuan
komunikasi interpersonal berada pada kategori rendah dan (3) Terdapat
hubungan yang signifikan dan positif antara konsep diri dan kemampuan
komunikasi interpersonal remaja sebesar 0,304. Dengan demikian
implikasinya terhadap pelayanan bimbingan dan konseling adalah perlunya program
pelayanan yang dapat meningkatkan konsep diri dan kemampuan komunikasi interpersonal
remaja.
