Developing Self-esteem and Career Aspiration. (An experimental study in
Vocational High School 5 Padang). Thesis. Graduate Program. State University of Padang.
Low self-esteem and career aspiration can impede the
adolescent development, such as career selection and preparation. Group guidance
can be used to improve self-esteem and career aspiration. This research was
aimed at disclosing the effectiveness of group guidance on the developing self
esteem and career aspiration.
An experimental research pretest and posttest
control group design was utilized to test whether group guidance can better
improve self-esteem and career aspiration. Two purposive sample groups of
students were selected from SMKN 5 and SMKN 1 Padang. Each group consisted of 15
students. Group guidance for experiment group was conducted in six sessions.
Data on self-esteem and career aspiration were collected through a pretest-posttest.
The data were then analyzed by using Wilcoxson Signed Ranks Test and
Kolmogorov-Smirnov Two Sample utilizing SPSS version 17.
The findings of this research were: (1) there is a
significant difference between post test and pre-test of the experiment group
on the self-esteem and career aspiration. (2) there is no difference on the pre
and post test of the control group students on self-esteem and career
aspiration. (3) there is a significant
difference on self-esteem and career aspiration between experiment group and
control group.
Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the
self-esteem and career aspiration can be enhanced through group guidance. This
research implies that group guidance program needs to be developed by
supervising teachers and counselors in order to improve the self-esteem and
career aspiration. Similar studies were suggested to conduct at different
contexts to compare the findings.
